Quick guidance by experience level. On learner and restricted licences you must ride a LAMS-approved bike.
Look at popular LAMS machines: Yamaha MT-03 / R3, Kawasaki Ninja 400 / Z400, Honda CB300R / CB500 range, KTM 390 Duke, Royal Enfield 350s. Most bikes up to 250cc qualify plus selected 251–660cc models in standard form — check the official NZTA LAMS list before buying, and note that power-increasing mods can void LAMS status.
Stepping off restricted? Middleweights like the Yamaha MT-07, Suzuki SV650, Kawasaki Z650 or Honda CB650R offer real-world performance without the intimidation of a litre bike. A Ride Forever Silver course is the perfect companion to the step up.
Full licence, open slather — sports, adventure, touring or cruiser. Do a Ride Forever Gold course (ACC sometimes offers cashbacks for completing one) and consider track days to explore performance safely.
This is general guidance, not a recommendation for any specific purchase — always test ride and check the current NZTA LAMS list.
Long rides hammer your wrists, neck, hips and lower back. A little prep goes a long way.
Warm up with shoulder rolls, neck rotations, wrist circles and hip openers. Two minutes at the servo beats two days of stiffness.
Core strength (planks, bird-dogs), grip endurance and hip mobility are the big three for riders. Strong core = less weight through your wrists.
Stop every 60–90 minutes. Stand on the pegs briefly (where safe), stretch your hip flexors and shake out your hands. Stay hydrated — fatigue is a crash factor.
Persistent pain or numbness? See a physio — many NZ physios treat riders and can assess your bike setup too. General info only, not medical advice.
